Doom, Gloom and Maedhros

Posted by Himring

Banner made for the series by Lingwiloke (Fandom Stocking 2016)
The main story arc of this series goes from just after the rescue from Thangorodrim to Maedhros's death. However, the narrative is not strictly chronological - there are flashbacks, flashforwards and recounted memories. These span from Maedhros's childhood in Tirion to his release from Mandos just before the end of Arda. The individual stories are told from different points of view: Maedhros himself, Fingon, Maglor and Elrond. Although the upshot of the series is that it is pretty tough being doomed all the time, some bits are a lot more gloomy than others. All the dialogue was even wittier before being clumsily translated from Quenya. Considering the subject matter, very little blood and gore (I think). The ratings and warnings for individual sections differ greatly from the overall rating: see the individual stories.
ETA: Since I wrote this description of the series, it has snowballed in all directions. I feel that the description ought to be revised, but it is difficult to know exactly how to tweak it. You may wish to compare the more recent description of the series (with notes) on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/series/36091
Other links that might be helpful are these: a fragmentary timeline (https://hhimring.dreamwidth.org/61360.html), and a listing of original characters: http://hhimring.dreamwidth.org/69187.html (both on my Dreamwidth journal)

The Dark Mage of Rhudaur

Posted by AliceNWonder000137

In the Year 1405, the Witch-King of Angmar begins his plan to conquer the northern kingdoms of Arthedain and Cardolan.  Rhudaur is mostly under his control but Dunadan Houses Melosse and Rhudainor stand in his way in the southeastern part of the failed kingdom.  He brings an Easterling mage, Ethacali to lead the effort to remove any resistance to his coming war.
Based on and inspired by the MERP RPG module of that name.

The Court of Ardor

Posted by AliceNWonder000137

After his release from the Halls of Mandos, Melkor seduces many of the Noldor with honeyed words and accusations against the Valar.  The Two Trees are ruined and the Sun and Moon arise.  One of these elves, Ardana the Astrologer, leads her people to return the skies to their original form, nothing by stars.  But she must destroy the Sun and Moon to accomplish that from her holds in the south of Middle Earth.
This is a non-canon story that is inspired by an MERP RPG series that was a gift from my aunt.  Most of the characters and settings were from the series and some quotes and songs are taken from Tolkien's writing.  It also ties in with the Wars in Beleriand and two my other two stories, The Dark Mage of Rhudaur and The Thieves of Tharbad.  The story is designed to span three ages.

The Court of Ardor

Posted by AliceNWonder000137

This story is a non canon tale of a group of elves that fell under Morgoth's sway and are planning to destroy the sun and moon.  An alliance opposes them through many obstacles.  The tale is set in the south of Middle Earth but has many ties to the Wars in Beleriand.  The story begins with the death of the Two Trees in Valinor.

The Thieves of Tharbad

Posted by AliceNWonder000137

War is upon the northern kingdoms as the Witch-King of Angmar unleashes his fury against Arthedain and Cardolan in the year 1409 of the Third Age.  Annuminas, Amon Sul and the Barrow Downs are destroyed by the armies of Angmar and the Royal Family of Cardolan is slain, except for one young lady.  A group of adventurers attempts so survive and to help rebuild the kingdom with a spoiled princess as refugees and hostile agents stream into the capitol of Tharbad.
This is a non-canon story, inspired by an MERP RPG series.  Arthedain and Cardolan stand against Angmar and the puppet kingdom of Rhudaur.  This is a sequel to The Dark Mage of Rhudaur and contains a number of the same characters.  It will also tie into The Court of Ardor.  There will be occasional quotes from Tolkien's writing to flesh out the story.

The Thieves of Tharbad

Posted by AliceNWonder000137

This story is inspired by a Middle Earth game module of the same name that I got from my aunt.  We thought that it was story worthy.  It is set during the great 1409 war of the Third Age in the Kingdom of Cardolan.  Many of the characters and settings are provided by the module but I've expanded it and fleshed it out.  It follows a group of adventurers who are caught up in the war and the fortunes of the kingdom.  I'll also look at the leaders of the kingdom and how they struggle to hold the realm together in the aftermath as both Arthedain and Gondor try to extend their power.

September Challenge: Jumble Sale

SWG September 2025 Jumble Sale challenge banner

Twenty years of SWG challenges has seen all kinds of use of the prompts that (mostly) moderators cook up each month to tempt and torment our challenge creators. Some challenges are worn thin with love. Others lie, untouched and growing dusty, in the attic of the SWG Challenge page. This month, in honor of twenty years of challenges, we are upcycling our old challenges and dusting them off for a second chance at life.

Jumble Sale prompts are created by SWG members using past challenges and prompts. For this challenge, you can choose your prompt from the list below. Each prompt is indicated by a "For Sale" and may include multiple elements. As always, we welcome creative interpretations of prompts and use of any part of the prompt.

Make sure to tag all challenges included in the prompt if you would like the stamps for them. Challenges from before 2017 do not have stamps, but there is a special stamp for creators who venture into the deepest, dustiest recesses of the SWG attic by creating for a prompt that uses a challenge from prior to 2017!

If you'd like to create prompts of your own but missed the original call, you're not too late! Submit Jumble Sale prompts here. Allow us forty-eight hours to update the website before querying.

Thank you to Varda delle Stelle for this month's stamps!

In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 15 October 2025. For complete challenge guidelines, see the Challenges page on our website.

Hador has been granted the lordship of Dor-lomin. Persuading his father to relocate there from the southern slopes of Ered Wethrin will not be easy, though.
